Nigeria: More Kidnapped Students Released

Ten Nigerian students have been released after a ransom was paid to gunmen operating in the northwestern parts of the country.

The latest development happens a week after ten other school-goers were freed. To date, 110 students have managed to flee or were released.

In July, approximately 121 students were kidnapped from Bethel Baptist High school – over 15 kilometres outside of Kaduna – in Kaduna State by armed men.

News of the latest round of student releases was confirmed by Reverend John Hayab, the head of a local parents association, on Sunday, 26 September.

Hayab said: “The kidnappers released ten more students today after we met their financial demand as with previous students they released.”

He added: “We now have 11 more students in captivity and we hope all will be released the next time we reach an agreement with the bandits.”

Since December last year, ten mass kidnappings have been orchestrated by bandits, who target children in order to extract ransoms from parents and authorities. They also terrorise the populace by looting and cattle-rustling.
